A guide to decorative painting

Q: What is the difference between trompe l'oeil, murals, and faux finishes?

Faux Finishes are painted representations of natural marble, wood, or stone applied to architecture, furniture, flooring. These finishes are applied to harmonize with the setting in which they will be seen. Trompe l'oeil, or trick of the eye, adds dimension to rooms by using perspective to create the illusion of depth. For example, windows, doorways, and whole rooms are painted on interior walls to give the viewer the feeling of added space. Murals are only limited by your own imagination - anything from surrealistic landscapes to fairy book characters.

Q: Do my walls need a special basecoat?

All finishes are applied over a previously painted surface, referred to as the basecoat. We recommend using a latex basecoat to best support acrylic and latex water based paints. We use acrylic paints exclusively to cut down on drying time, avoid toxic fumes, and to give us more versatility in our techniques. If you're not sure what is currently on your walls, we can determine the basecoat and recommend what should be done to prepare the wall before finishing.

Q: How durable are these paintings?

For durability and longevity all finishes can be sealed with a protective coat, which can be washed, repaired, or repainted with ease. Most areas in a home, with the exception of the bathroom, do not require a protective coat. The acrylics used are high quality and will last for many years. Furniture, floor painting and floorcloths are given layers of a protective coating due to their high amount of use.

Q: How far will you travel?

We are able to travel anywhere in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Mileage and duration of the project determine the costs for travel outside this area.

Q: How do we get started?

A: Please email Anne Stine or call 703-431-7152 to discuss your project. Quotes can be given over the phone for small items; however, wall treatments will require a visit to the site to determine the scope of the work. We will create a letter of agreement that includes an outline of the project, an itemized quote, and start date. Once the letter is accepted, you will receive painted sample boards so you can understand the scope of the project and approve it before actual work is begun on your wall, furniture, etc.
